Do I need to follow the Law of Moses?

This is a common question for a new believer as well as many who have been followers of Christ for years. In order to answer this question it would be good to lay down some foundation to arrive to the correct conclusion. Let’s go back to the Old Testament to find out why the Law of Moses exists in the first place.

And Moses went up unto God, and the Lord called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel; Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself. Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all the people: for all the earth is mine: And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel. And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the Lord commanded him. And all the people answered together, and said, All that the Lord hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the Lord. – Exodus 19:3-9 KJV

In this particular scenario the people had been set free of Egypt and they were in the wilderness headed for the promised land. The Lord has always wanted to have a personal relationship with them and with us today. He has never liked sacrifices or killing of animals. In the book of Exodus 19:8 the people said they would do all that the Lord had spoken. The Lord in return had to do something to point the people towards a savior or else they would simply do things as if they were marking a check list. It had to be something that was impossible to do so the people would still look to God.

After Moses had reported this news to the Lord he descended Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandments. Those were not meant to be simple and no one could keep them because they were not meant to be completed. Year after year they would feel full of sin and always feeling like they could accomplish none of it. And so they waited and looked forward to the savior who would set them free of this bondage.

So the question we need to ask is: Does everyone need to continue trying to meet the requirements of the Law of Moses (Ten Commandments/ 613 ordinances) even after Jesus died on the cross? The answer to this is NO! We all have a new covenant and better promises through Jesus.

But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. For if the first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. – Hebrews 8:6-7 KJV

There is a reference in the Book of Revelation to how displeasing it is to Jesus if people who are not Jews are trying to act and pass as though they are.

I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan. – Revelation 2:9 KJV

It does not please Jesus when people are trying to pass as Jews and attempting to fulfill the Law. The Law of Moses was created for the children of Israel. It was not meant for any other people outside of this family. They are the chosen people and the ones who have a covenant with God. They are known as the 12 tribes of Israel and their descendants. And as it was mentioned earlier it was to point them to the needed savior. The Bible even tells us that when a person tries to fulfill the Law of Moses there is a veil that forms over their eyes.

And not as Moses which put a vail over his face, that the children of Israel could not steadfastly look to the end of that which is abolished. But their minds were blinded: for until this day remained the same vail untaken away in the reading of the Old Testament; which vail is done away in Christ. – 2 Corinthians 3:13-14 KJV

With Christ the veil is taken away and we can see and understand spiritual things clearly. When we try to follow the old covenant and it’s ordinances we become blind to the things of God. So we are not meant to follow this today! I hope this gives you a clear understanding and helps bring peace to your heart to know that you are part of a new covenant.
