The Day of Redemption
And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Ephesians 4:30 KJV
Today we are going to go deeper in the meaning of this scripture found in Ephesians. It says we are sealed unto “the day of redemption.” Many Christians, as well as myself, may have thought the day of redemption was the day when the Lord returns but in actuality this scripture refers to another time further in the future. We say a lot of things in future tense because we have been taught this in bible studies or in church. But “the day of redemption” appears to be when the Lord completely destroys death. It is true he defeated death when he descended to the lower depths but it is actually complete when death and hell are thrown into the lake of fire. This means there is still a while to go before the final day of redemption but we can still view it as done.
There is only one instance in the Bible that the wording is written in this manner. There is “the day of the Lord” and I believe this can be confused as the day of redemption. To my knowledge and according to scriptures the day of the Lord is when the Lord Jesus returns.
The word redemption in Greek is “apolytrōsis”. If we observe the definition in the Strong’s dictionary we find this: a releasing effected by payment of ransom a) deliverance b) liberation procured by the payment of a ransom.
Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. Matthew 20:28 KJV
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s. 1 Corinthians 6:20 KJV
Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. Acts 20:28 KJV
Jesus paid the ransom that was upon the world through the blood he shed on the cross. He redeemed us from the punishment caused by Adam’s disobedience. In the scriptures we know that through the disobedience of one (Adam) and the obedience of another (Jesus) we are now saved.
For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. Romans 5:19 KJV
* The Day of The Lord *
Now let us look at some other scriptures that refer to “the day of the Lord.”
Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 1:8 KJV
The day of the Lord in this scripture refers to when the Lord will bring judgment upon the unbelievers and rewards to his faithful servants.
To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 1 Corinthians 5:5 KJV
In this scripture Paul recommended a sinful man who had been sleeping with his fathers wife to be turned over to his sinful desires. His body would be destroyed by satan because this is what happens to a person who does not change his ways and continues to sin with his body. In this scenario it appears his soul would be saved in the day the Lord returns. Although the body is destroyed the soul is saved. The “spirit” in this case is not talking about the Holy Spirit but it refers to his will, mind and emotions (his soul). The Holy Spirit does not need to be saved because that is the presence of God. But the soul is the portion of someone’s body that needs salvation.
As also ye have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are our’s in the day of the Lord Jesus. 2 Corinthians 1:14 KJV
These scriptures and several more mention “the day of the Lord.” We can come to the conclusion, due to the context it is presented, that this is referring to the day when the Lord Jesus returns to us all, his second coming.
If we look further into the definition of redemption we find the word used figuratively as riddance or (specially) as Christian salvation. So if we combine the event with the White Throne judgment we can see this “redemption” is also about getting rid of death permanently. This would be the moment when it happens, when the Father makes the final judgment and throws death and hell in to the lake of fire forever. Our redemption would be complete.
14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. Revelation 20:14 KJV

We have been sealed with the Holy Spirit “unto” the day of redemption. It lets us know there is a specific time then it stops. Right now we know things partially. When we prophesy we also prophesy in part.
We live with faith, hope and love. The greatest of these is love. From scripture we know Love is a person. Who is love? God the father is love. He doesn’t have love, he IS love. When he comes then that which is in part will be done away.
When a Christian receives a “Rhema” word through the Holy Spirit we only know things partially but when God the Father comes to live with us we will stop this partiality. It will cease. This is what appears the scripture is revealing to us.
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 1 John 4:8 KJV
God is love! The Holy Spirit is a person and he is the voice of God and when the Father comes to live with us we will not speak to him through the Spirit any longer. We will speak with him face to face. WOW! Praise the Lord! This is the final step of our redemption.
10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. 1 Corinthians 13:10 KJV
The Greek word for away is “katargéō.” The definition says to render idle, unemployed, inactivate, inoperative. To cause a person or thing to have no further efficiency, to deprive of force, influence, power. To cause to cease, put an end to, do away etc. Through the Spirit we know in part but when God the Father comes to live with us we will be complete.
