What Happened In the Garden of Eden?

What Happened In the Garden of Eden?

Today we are going to go over a topic which caught me a little by surprise. When we speak to the body of Christ we can sometimes find out the discrepancies in doctrine which often lead to misunderstandings of the Word of God. The enemy does not stop misleading the body of Christ. The latest lie spreading in the church is a teaching that Eve had sex with Satan in the Garden of Eden. This can mislead a new believer down a path of error. In order to debunk this theology we will go back to the basics.

We must first understand what is sin? Sin is a disobedience to what God has spoken. In the Garden of Eden, God gave Adam specific instructions. There were many trees in the Garden to sustain him but God told Adam not to eat of 1 tree. This was a tree pertaining to the knowledge of good and evil. God told Adam he could eat of every tree but do not eat from the tree of knowledge.

And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. Genesis 2:16-17 KJV

* LUCIFER – The Light Bearer *

Everything was fine until the “angel of light” (Lucifer), who was later known as “Satan”, rebelled against God. There was war in heaven and Satan and the angels that sided with him were cast out of heaven. There are 2 accounts that give us this part of history. Jesus gives us 1 account and the apostle John gives us another supplemental account.

And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Luke 10:18 KJV

And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Revelation 12:9 KJV

Jesus told the disciples he saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. After Satan was cast out of heaven he went to deceive God’s creation. He spoke with Eve and enticed her. What did Eve do? She disobeyed God’s commandment and ate of the fruit from the forbidden tree. Not only did she eat but she influenced her husband Adam to eat of it as well. Eve did not partake in a sexual act. She ate an actual fruit of a tree that was forbidden. This scenario and account seems pretty straight forward until we read the decree and the depth of both their consequences for their actions.

The Lord God spoke with Adam and Eve to find out their reasoning for  being fearful and hiding from Him. Once it is discovered that Satan was a participant of their deception a consequence was decreed.

* The Decree *

And I will put enmity [hatred] between thee [Satan] and the woman [Eve], and between thy seed [fruit of disobedience] and her seed [fruit of righteousness]; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Genesis 3:15 KJV

There is a lot to unfold in this scripture. As you can see there are brackets inserted to help you understand the meaning of the words chosen. What did the Lord God mean by “the seed”? In a spiritual sense, the seed from Eve would be a person who practices righteousness or is righteous. The seed of Satan would always have hatred towards the seed of Eve. Please take note that He did not say the word seed in plural, as “seeds”, but a “seed” referring to one person, an heir. This is a person who could correct the error that occurred. This “seed” from Eve is referring to Jesus.

For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. Romans 5:19 KJV

This scripture sums up perfectly what happened in the Garden of Eden. Through Adam’s disobedience to God many people were made sinners and through one man’s obedience to God which is Jesus, many will be made righteous.

In the moment Adam disobeyed God there was a lineage of disobedience created. This lineage would include people who would not listen to God; people who would not want a relationship with God and ultimately do evil in the sight of God. This was what Satan created when he convinced Eve to disobey God. He did not have physical or sexual intimacy with Eve. He did not need to. It was a mere questioning her of what was her identity. She was already like God but she did not realize.

* Evil Spread *

In chapter 4 of Genesis we read what the “seed” of Satan created. Evil began to fill the hearts of men.

And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. Genesis 4:16 KJV

Cain was the first of Adam’s children to do evil in the sight of God. He was corrupted by the disobedience that occurred in the Garden. Evil began to multiply and through Cain’s lack of a relationship with God, he had other descendants who did not follow God. If you recall from the story, Cain went out from the presence of the Lord. He was no longer in fellowship with God.

Cain killed his own brother because he hated him. This was the fruit of hatred (enmity) that was born or created, so to speak. Further in chapter 4 we see Cain’s descendent Lamech (sinned) and also killed men. This evil has shown up again in the family. His action would be considered a fruit of disobedience.

* The New Seed Lineage *

So what happens from here? Adam and Eve had another son that would in time produce the heir of righteousness. His name was Seth. His sons would be men who would call upon the name of the Lord. In other words, a relationship with the Lord has begun again.

And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the Lord. Genesis 4:16 KJV  (Fruit of righteousness)

The “seed” – It appears through Abel’s actions towards God that God had respect for him. He was a son of faith. We have to remember that God’s children are children of faith and relationship. They always have and will be. Through Abel’s faith and devotion to God Jesus was supposed to have been born from his lineage. But Satan had indirectly and successfully stopped that from happening. Since Cain killed Abel a new relationship with God was created, a new line of faith began from Seth. Cain was not a practicer of faith nor of righteousness. God had no respect for the offerings he offered God at the harvest. It appears he did not bring the best. He must have given the “leftovers” as an offering for God not to be pleased.

The bible tells us Abel was a keeper of the sheep and Cain was a tiller of the ground. It is interesting to read these descriptions. Abel was similar to how Jesus is our pastor. He is considered a keeper of the sheep as well. Jesus watches over us and takes care of us. He protects us from the wolves and those who try to kill us.

We hope this brings you a clear perspective of what happened in the Garden of Eden and will keep you from following any doctrines of the devil.
